The Slowness of Light. María Lara

From 25 June to 15 November, the 5th Floor of the CentroCentro cultural centre will host an exhibition devoted to the artist from Granada, who is considered to be a “secret painter” as her work has hardly been displayed publicly, although she has gained recognition in recent years. Her work raises awareness of mental and sensory perceptions that take on a physical reality through painting. The exhibition is made up of around 40 pieces, including paintings and drawings that trace her career over the past twenty-five years, in which her rigorous research, sustained with patient determination, has reached a vibrant purification of high aesthetic intensity. Her creations unfold the intrinsic qualities of painting, a far cry from descriptive or literary content. In her paintings, there is no representation, no metaphor, no metaphysics, just the reality of their format, size, vibrant chromatic fields, and their simple, not simplistic, composition structures, structured around horizontal or vertical strips. Her pieces arise from a sensitive and attentive look at the variations in light in her studio, which are devices that are carefully and slowly constructed through a precise assessment of colour, their combinations and rhythms.
